Mid Century Modern DIY Retro Nightstand Project

I built these mid century modern nightstands to compliment my recent platform bed, but this stylish design is versatile enough to go with just about any contemporary decor.  This is also a really great project for a beginner to intermediate DIY woodworker and can easily be knocked out in one or two weekends.

Tatami Inspired DIY Platform Queen Size Bed Plans

I’ve had my eye on a DIY platform bed project utilizing the Tatami style joinery for a couple years now, but another project always seemed to keep coming up. That all changed recently when my daughter decided to redesign her room with a minimalist modern look and decided to ditch the old spindle bed.  This was the perfect opportunity for that clean, elegant platform bed design I’ve been looking to do.

New Coffee Art Series

I’ve been working on a few new pieces of wall art made from coffee importer bags.  These things are so cool!  I recently picked up a few bags, but wasn’t sure exactly what I would do with them.  The visuals on the bag caught my eye and they just have this cool coffee shop vibe that I wanted to come up with a way to experience.  Then I ran across another piece of decorative wall art printed on burlap, the two ideas collided and here are my first two pieces…

How to Set Up a French Cleat Wall Easel

I’ve been trying to figure out how best to position large canvases for painting since my current easel isn’t all that great and I’d rather spend the limited time I have painting rather than constructing another easel (which I’m sure I’ll do at some point).  One of the challenges I keep running into is how to position my canvases, particularly the bigger ones, vertical instead of at an angle.

SketchUp Tutorial: Adding Pocket Holes to Your Models

I’m in the middle of creating plans for another piece of furniture that has a number of pocket hole joints.  I thought it might be helpful for some of my woodworking readers who also like to use SketchUp to put together a really quick tutorial on putting 3D renderings of pocket holes into your models.  This comes in handy where you have joints where you’re using pocket holes on multiple sides and you want to drill your holes so that the screws don’t hit each other.

How to Replace the Capacitor on a Craftsman Radial Arm Saw

Here’s a video on how I fixed an annoying problem with my Sears Craftsman model 113 radial arm saw.  I was having intermittent problems with the saw blade not spinning and the motor just humming.  After a couple projects, I couldn’t get the blade to spin at all and when I turned the saw on, it would trip the breaker.  I was able to get it working again by replacing the capacitor on the motor and shot this video to show you how to do that repair.

DIY Emerson Dresser – How To Build

When building my Kendal Extra Wide Dresser, I was also simultaneously building another smaller Emerson 3 drawer dresser.  This classic dresser style is so versatile and can be used in just about any setting for either children or adults and is a great project for someone just getting into woodworking with maybe one or two previous projects under their belt.  While I stained the Kendal dresser for a more rustic look, my plan for the Emerson is to paint it white and give it to my daughter to compliment her multi-colored room!

***Update***  I’m trying to get as many reader photos as I can up on my Facebook page, so check out https://www.facebook.com/edhart.me/ for other reader projects.  They look great!!! ***

I confess I’m a little late getting this post up, but I wanted to highlight one of my reader’s rustic farmhouse bed projects since it turned out so nice!  Ronnie was also the reader that inspired me to rework the original queen sized plan into a king size rustic bed plan.

Two Recently Updated Woodworking Plans

Updated-Plans

I recently updated a couple of my woodworking plans with more detailed and thorough assembly instructions and updated the cut lists.  Since I wrote the original plans a couple years ago, I thought it might be helpful to post new links to them.
