Loft Bed Plan with Desk and Bookcase

This loft bed plan is inspired by the Rhys Loft Bed from Pottery Barn and Ana White’s loft bed plan, particularly her construction of the frame enabling it to be disassembled.

I’ve designed 2 versions of this with the only difference being whether or not the desk has drawers. This post illustrates the basic desk version with no drawers.

Bed Assembly Overview

Before breaking down the assembly, here are a few pictures of the construction so you can get the big picture in mind.

The headboard and footer are both identical and designed so that the bed rails will slide into place and be attached with screws so that the bed can be disassembled in case it needs to be moved.

The posts are made of 3 layers of 1x3s which should be fully glued and reinforced with 2″ wood screws. The cross braces (1x4s and 1x8s) are attached on center of the 1×3 “stack” with pocket hole screws. Here’s a closeup of the top section:

The bed rails are built from 1x8s and 1x2s which serve as supports for the slats. The support is reinforced by a 2×2 running the length of the bed and this will be screwed (but not glued) to the headboard and footer.

Looking at the rails without the slats you can see the measurements a little better.

And here’s another view of the slats and support without the rails.

Hi! Wondering if you have plans similar to thr new PB Kendall loft with the drawers, steps and space for a full underneath?

We’ve completed this project, but I’m behind adding the assembly instructions and project pictures. This one is modeled after the Rhys with a bookshelf and desk underneath.
I will be updating that in the next couple weeks, along with a downloadable version. I haven’t seen the Kendall yet, so I’ll look that up.
Thanks,
Ed
