Tatami Inspired Platform Bed King Version

If you’re been looking for a king version of my Tatami Inspired Platform Bed, you’ve come to the right place!  I’ve re-sized the original queen plans and added additional supports to the base to accommodate the larger and heavier 76″ x 80″ standard king mattress.  You can access a SketchUp model of the king sized bed here.

Downloadable PDF Plan

I’ve also created a $5 printable PDF version of this plan that also includes the accompanying bench, which you can purchase for $5 (it’s about 37 pages in all).  It’s all the info from the blog posts, but I’ve compiled it for easy printing in whatever section you want and included shopping list, cut diagram, assembly schematic and helpful project build pictures.  Basically, if you want a handy printable version so you don’t have to get sawdust all over your computer, you might consider purchasing this download.

Hello, I’m working on making the king size version of this and ran into a discrepancy. The cut list specifies different measurements than what the diagram shows. What are the actual cuts for the 1×5?

Hi Julian, thanks for pointing that out! After reviewing the 3D rendering, I believe you’re talking about the middle supports underneath the slats (please let me know if that’s not it). The correct measurements are from the cut list – 4 @ 7.25″ and 4 @ 8.75″ – the “2” in the cut list is a typo… not sure why I did that! The diagram above (showing 6″ and 7.5″) is incorrect and I need to fix that.

Ed does it matter if you put the notches on the opposite rails? Such as the longer rail going over the shorter instead of the reverse.

Hi Ken, that’s fine to do that, but the place where you’ll need to work around a little is with the headboard. Instead of assembling that as a unit, you’d need to assemble the top 5 panels and then attach them to the header rail using the ribs. However, the boards should be reversible so you could also flip them over.
Thanks,
Ed

Thanks Ed, sent the same comment twice, sorry just disregard. The measurements for the bed were very precise. Other then putting the upper notch on the wrong side, the frame came out perfect.

Considering trying my luck on building a King Size frame. Prior purchasing your instruction version could you tell me what is the Width of the Frame Rails you are using and any ideas on what wood you would use ??
Thanks

Hi Craig, thanks for the note. I assume you asking about the length of the rails, which is 85″, since they are standard 1x4s. If you’re indeed asking about the width, then once you add the trim (1×2) to the side rails, it would be 2 1/2″ actual width (3/4″ for the 1×4 + 1 1/2″ for the 1×2).
Thanks,
Ed

Forgot to address the other question about what wood to use. I’ve used both pine & poplar on this model and both have worked well. If you’re going to stain, I like poplar a little better. Had some readers build with cypress and one guy used cherry.

Hi Mohan, thanks for the note. I haven’t priced this plan in a little while, but I’d estimate that the king plan would be around $200 if you were using a less expensive wood like pine.

Hi Jess,
I don’t have a version for a California King, but the plan would be easy to modify for that. A California King is 72″ x 84″ so you’d need to adjust the bed rails to be 4″ longer than the king version and the header and footer to be 4″ less than the standard size. That will also affect the support slats and the 2x2s that support the slats. The basic construction would be the same.
Thanks!
Ed

I purchased the PDF of these plans earlier today, the funds came out of my account, but there has been zero communication since. How do I access the PDF I purchased?

Hi Trent,
Thanks for the purchase, and sorry you didn’t get the link immediately. First check your junk email folder to see if the download link went there. An email with the download link is automatically sent as soon as a plan is purchased. If you don’t see it there, email [email protected] and let me know and I’ll send another link your way.
Thanks!
Ed
