David Copperfield has a Cool Face

On a recent Southwest flight, I was flipping through the Spirit magazine and ran across an add for a David Copperfield show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Since I’ve been working on portraits, this add made a perfect picture from which to practice.  Since I’ve started working on portraits, you really start to notice facial features and David’s cool face jumped out at me!

I was kind of engrossed in working on the picture during my relatively short flight that I didn’t notice that I was attracting some attention from the folks on my aisle.  I got a couple very nice and complimentary comments, which I really appreciated considering that I’ve only done a couple of these as I’ve been reading through my new favorite website, learn-to-draw.com.  I certainly don’t want that to sound like any kind of brag, since any real artists who happen upon this post will probably immediately see all kinds of problems with it.  I’m considering it a “finished” unfinished piece since I probably won’t try to do anymore work on it.

Here’s my David Copperfield sketch and below that is the original from the Spirit magazine.
