The Mojito: A Classic Cuban Cocktail with a Citrus Twist

Cool, citrusy, and steeped in Cuban history, the Mojito is a warm weather classic. This version uses Bacardi Limón for a zesty twist that’s perfect for your next patio hangout.

There’s something undeniably refreshing about a Mojito—the combination of bright mint, zesty lime, and effervescent bubbles makes it feel like sunshine in a glass. And when you swap in a citrusy rum like Bacardi Limón, it adds an extra layer of flavor that makes the drink pop even more. Whether you’re lounging on the patio or hosting friends for a summer evening, this riff on the classic Mojito might just become your go-to warm weather drink.

Rum, Revolution, and Refreshment: The Backstory of the Mojito

Rum-based cocktails have long held a special place in the hearts of drinkers, particularly in tropical and coastal regions. Rum itself is deeply tied to the history of the Caribbean—distilled from sugarcane byproducts like molasses, it was first produced in the 17th century and quickly spread throughout the West Indies and colonial Americas.

The Mojito, one of the oldest known rum cocktails, traces its origins to Cuba. A predecessor to the Mojito called El Draque was reportedly consumed by the English sea captain Sir Francis Drake in the late 1500s. It combined aguardiente (a rough, early form of rum) with sugar, lime, and mint as a medicinal tonic to ward off illness on long sea voyages.

The modern Mojito took shape in Havana, particularly during the 19th century as rum production refined and Cuban cocktail culture flourished. By the 20th century, the Mojito had become a signature drink of Havana’s elite and was eventually exported to the rest of the world. Ernest Hemingway—ever the cocktail trendsetter—is said to have enjoyed them at La Bodeguita del Medio, a bar still operating in Havana today.

Why Bacardi Limón Works So Well

Traditionally, Mojitos are made with white rum, but using Bacardi Limón—a citrus-infused rum—adds a bright, zippy edge that complements the lime and enhances the freshness of the mint. It’s a simple tweak that takes the cocktail from great to exceptional, especially for drinkers who enjoy a more citrus-forward profile.

Course: Cocktails

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bacardi Limón rum
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves
  • 3/4 oz fresh lime juice about half a lime
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup or 1 tsp sugar
  • Club soda to top
  • Ice crushed or cubes
  • Lime wedge and mint sprig for garnish

Method

  1. Muddle: In a tall glass, gently muddle the mint leaves with the lime juice and simple syrup. Don’t pulverize the mint—just press to release the oils.
  2. Add rum: Pour in the Bacardi Limón and stir to combine.
  3. Add ice: Fill the glass with ice, preferably crushed for that traditional texture.
  4. Top it off: Add a splash of club soda (2–3 oz or to taste) and gently stir again.
  5. Garnish: Add a sprig of mint and a wedge of lime. Serve with a straw if desired.

Notes

Additional Tips:

  • For deeper flavor: Let the mint, lime, and sugar sit for 2–3 minutes after muddling to let the oils and citrus mingle.
  • Make it a pitcher: Multiply the ingredients by 5 and prepare in a large pitcher, adding soda and ice just before serving.
